This July KDC brings you Rumours - a comedy by the award-winning Broadway playwright, Neil Simon. This play of cover-ups and calumny amongst the political classes has never been more relevant than in today's world of deception and spin.

Set at the home of a senior party official, the first guests arrive to find that the host has shot himself (through the earlobe), his wife is missing (presumed departed) and all on the night of their tenth wedding anniversary. As more guests descend upon them it's down to his lawyer, Ken, and his wife, Chris, to spin the truth and hide the scandal!

Rumours will be performed at the Landor Theatre from Tues 31 July - Sat 4 August 2007

Review by Leigh Tredger

Farce can be the most difficult form of theatre to direct and Richard Williams tackled the task superbly. Fun, playful French tunes filled the theatre as the audience observed the cleverly detailed set. The actors entered with the dilemma at hand.

When directing a farce staying true to the style is important. Williams maintained the general rhythm of the piece only allowing the energy to drop briefly. There were stylised moments that were witty and flowed instinctually. Enough tension was created to keep the audience in suspense.

Entrances and exits were slick and energised. This flow kept the audience engaged as they awaited the characters next irrational move. Other than slight moments of awkward bunching the blocking naturally progressed.

If the actors/director had the luxury of reworking the piece or had the option of a longer run I would have liked to see more variety and detail in the colour/texture of the production. However this is not to say it lacked these qualities rather that it could have been more specific.

All the actors were committed to the reality of the action and the ridiculous scenario. Characters and relationships were detailed and interesting. Nick Mouton displayed some good comic timing and was lucky to play besides Laura Stanley who executed the role with sincerity and vigour. I thought that the brief encounter with PC Conklin played by Edward Culver was very entertaining. Overall there was a great sense of cast cohesion and everyone was dedicated to the “seriousness” of the situation.

I observed real choices made by the director, for instance using family/political photographs in the living room. The use of the “Macarena” was hilarious and really surprised the audience. Neil Simon’s ideas concerning status and affluence were clearly revealed in the show, as were his ideas around friendship and loyalty. The play was made relevant and was politicised thus adding to the significance of its themes.

I would like to see Williams direct something that would truly challenge him, as I believe that he will really excel.
