The Libertine by Stephen Jeffreys Directed by Dan West The Libertine is a poignant, yet shocking, tale of the earl of Rochester, friend and confident of Charles II and the most notorious rake of his age. He was an anti-monarchist royalist, an atheist who converted to Christianity and a lyric poet who revelled in pornography. He spent his days trying to find the next thrill with his friends – be it women, wine or the theatre. When he finally does fall in love with someone other than himself and find a reason to live he is rejected and left to die, drunk and alone. The Libertine will be performed at the Landor Theatre from Tuesday 18th - Saturday 22nd August 2009. |
